The movie was made on S. habrochaities growing next to the orchard (S11 34.332, W 76 43.631), which is ~20m from the road and ~10m from the irrigation ditch. The bees are still being identified.

Bedinger Blog 3 – to the north!
After breakfast at CIP Bruce, Roger and I met with our host Merideth Bonierbale to talk more about future collaborations including a possible proposal to the new BREAD program at NSF. I really like the idea of bending our research toward a practical application. We are thinking about overcoming barriers to crossing of crop plants (tomato and potato) with some of the incredibly drought-resistant wild species in Solanum; specifically S. pennellii and S. sitiens. We left Lima around 11 AM and arrived around 4 PM in Barranca (too late for a foray up the Pativilca River). We looked at the Lonely Planet recommended hotel downtown but decided to explore the waterfront instead and found a nice hotel (Casablanca) for 40 soles/night ($13) right across from the beach. Gloria, Roger, Paul and Reynaldo all went swimming and got totally thrashed in the waves. I had my first tacu tacu for dinner (a molded rice dish, in my case with seafood) and early to bed. Up at 7 to head north, we stopped brifly at the enormous Chimu (older culture than Inca) fort called Paramonga. After heading up the Rio Pativilca, we were disappointed to find out from a local farmer that agriculture (sugar cane specifically) had wiped out all of the wild tomatoes in the region. We have also noted that there do not seem to be any wild tomatoes at elevations below 1000m, which is very bad because that is the range of S. pimpinellifolium, a wild tomato relative with many beneficial traits that can be easily crossed with domesticated tomato. This is a terrible loss of genetic resources that could be critical for the future of tomato. Back in the van we settled in for the long drive to Trujillo, a lovely city with many beautiful colonial buildings. After checking in at our most expensive and classiest hotel of the trip (El Conquistador, $60/night) we met Roger’s former student Pedro for dinner, again fabulous traditional Peruvian food. In the morning we took off early for the road to Cajamarca along the Rio Jequetepeque (try saying that ten times fast). The road is called “Highway 8” but this is clearly some kind of bad joke. It is mostly gravel but is even worse when it pretends to be paved—drivers on both sides are constantly swerving frantically on both sides of the road to avoid huge potholes. We visited two sites on the drive to Cajamarca. The first was in the town of Tembladera, one of the prettiest and cleanest towns we saw on the entire trip. There were nice populations of S. pimpinellifolium right in town. After a picnic in the plaza we headed out of town to look for the sympatric species S. arcanum and found some populations a couple of kilometers down the “road” along with more pimpinellifolium. The next site was past the town of Chilente at the red Puente Muyano. We found plentiful pimpinellifolium and also its paired sympatric species S. arcanum, including a plant that looked exactly like the one found in 1980, growing out of a rock cliff. Again, a great day.
After this we started the steep climb up to the Abra Galivan pass at 3080m. On the way a thick fog settled in and my tranquilizer hat was much needed. Often we met convoys of large trucks on the narrow road, most of them associated with the gold mine near Cajamarca. After some driving around in Cajamarca (Carlos is a man who feels comfortable asking for directions – MANY times) we located the beautiful El Ingenio hotel with lovely gardens, a restaurant, laundry service (badly needed) and even its own chapel, built in the early ‘30s. We are especially grateful for internet service and were able to contact our families with Skype after a nice dinner. In Cajamarca we are cold for the first time, and it is very wet and green here in striking contrast to the desert- like environments we have been in so far. It rained all night, so the trip on a bad road to a possible site was cancelled. We all attempted to watch the Webcast of the PI meeting for the NSF BREAD program from Washington DC but reception was very spotty and we missed most of the transmission, while Paul, Gloria and Reynaldo did pollinations. Afterward we all walked into town, which is quite beautiful with several baroque churches, one decorated with a four-breasted woman which was a genetic characteristic of members of a local village at the time. As the rain increased in intensity we took refuge in a local restaurant and again had fabulous Peruvian food. We then visited a local open market and were impressed with the huge array of fruits and vegetables and seafood including very large squid mantles (would not want to meet one of those guys in a dark alley). There are many peasants making their livings in and nearby Cajamarca, and they wear very distinctive hats with a high crown and curled up brims. Must be good for rain. The next day was too rainy for the rough road we wanted to travel on so we were tourists again. We visited the Banyo del Inca, the hot springs where the reign of the Incas came to an end with the invasion of the Spanish Conquistador Pizarro. The market near the baths featured freshly squeezed pineapple juice (wonderful) and meats drying in the open air (yes that is guinea pig in the picture). We next went to museums in town including the Ransom Room where the last Incan Emperor Atahuallpa was kept hostage while a huge gold and silver ransom was collected. The Spanish then killed him despite the treasure they received. On our way between museums we encountered a folk market where traditional music was being played including on very long horns only used in this region of Peru – very cool. One of the musicians enticed Bruce to dance with him, much to the delight of all onlookers (take a look at everyone’s faces in the pic). We actually collected at a site in Cajamarca at the cemetery where S. habrochaites is still thriving after many years. As we visited with some of the townspeople of Cajamarca, we felt like we were finally getting know something about life in Peru, not driving in the van or cloistered (very comfortably I should say) at CIP in Lima. This was my stomach misery day (we each only had one, fortunately) so I rested in the afternoon. My recommendation for these events; first try Pepto Bismol, then Imodium, then if still sick, take antibiotics (we all brought Cipro with us just in case).
The next day as we drove back to the coast was our last big hunting day. Just over the Abra Galivan pass we found our most scenic collection site (again at a cemetery, seems like our trip theme) high in the mountains – with a beautiful population of S. habrochaites, with lots of active pollinators to catch. As Gloria, Reynaldo and I were collecting for proteomics on a path on the edge of a cliff, Reynaldo suddenly shouted and pointed “Go that way!” so we ran down the trail closely followed by an irate dog who was in charge of a herd of burros, sheep and cattle (including bulls). Meanwhile, Steve, Paul and Roger were up the trail chatting with the owner (Paul will post the video) about local cures for stomach ailments (it was Roger’s turn for the misery day). She was quite a character. In this beautiful setting we dissected styles for RNA and proteomics. Further down the road we saw a local market in progress with a “parking lot” full of burros.

Our last hunt was about 12 km up a rough road between Chilete and Contumaza to seek a habrochaites/arcanum sympatric pair, which we finally found up a lovely valley. This area will be very good for future sympatric studies – both species are found throughout the valley. We then had a miserable bumpy ride down “Highway” 8 to the coast to the beach town of Pacasmayo. Roger and Bruce were too tired for dinner, but after a lovely seaside repast the young folks stayed up until midnight doing pollinations. The next day we headed north to visit an archeological museum in Lambayeque. The Moche culture (again, more ancient than the Incan) produced epecially beautiful ceramics. I tried a new dish at a local “Restaurant Turistico” (that’s us! Tourists!) called an Enrollado – chicken breast rolled around a seafood stuffing. The food in Peru is amazing. In the 1930’s a famous gastronomic person proclaimed that the top three cuisines in the world were 1. French (he was French himself, surprise surprise) 2. Chinese, and 3. Peruvian. I believe it, now, after having an incredible variety of great food here. We headed down the Panamerican Highway again and stopped for the night in the village of Huanchaco, famous for its ocean-going reed fishing boats. These beautiful, ancient boats are still used for fishing, and are not just for tourists to take photos of, although we certainly did do that . Steve finally had an opportunity to use his new flowered swim shorts for a morning swim along with Paul, Reynaldo and Gloria. After a long drive to Lima (noting many political signs painted on buildings) and a final seaside picnic, we found sandwiches awaiting us in our dorm rooms late at night (thank you CIP!). Whew.

Por la mañana temprano Pat, Paul, Steve y yo optamos por aprovechar el hueco que aún no habíamos cubierto en la mañana para hacer una visita express al Museo de la Nación de Lima. A las 11 ya estábamos de vuelta en el CIP para acudir a una visita guiada por el banco de germoplasma de patata. La agenda había sido apretada hasta el último momento, pero bien organizada. Tras esto, terminamos de procesar las muestras recolectadas a lo largo del viaje, últimas fotos, recogida de equipaje. Finalmente y como bromeaban algunos, la última cena pero sin cuy (cobaya; plato típico de la zona de los andes; existe alguna representación de la última cena con carne de cuy al centro como alimento principal)en el comedor del CIP. Nuestros vuelos salían de forma escalonada en la noche, por lo que nos fuimos despidiendo.

Tras el desayuno comenzamos el procesado de las muestras para extracción de proteínas, DNA, RNA, semillas, conservación de polinizadores...Después del almuerzo planeábamos hacer algo de turismo en Lima antes de la cena, pero lo que iban a ser unos minutos para ultimar algunos detalles con la compañía que nos alquiló la furgoneta se prolongaron y no dió tiempo para mucho antes de que oscureciera. Esa noche cenamos en un bonito restaurante situado en la playa como cena de despedida.

Emprendíamos el regreso a Lima, la expedición se acababa y aunque el cansancio se hacía notar ya en la mayoría, creo que a ninguno nos hubiera importado continuar con la aventura unos dias mas. Paramos a media mañana a comer un bocadillo y la fruta que aún quedaba en la furgoneta en un pueblo de costa llamado Tortuga, donde había un montón de pelícanos y barcas tipo jábega. Tras algo mas de 6 horas de coche, llegamos sanos y salvos al CIP.

Salimos en dirección a Chiclayo para visitar el Museo de las Tumbas de Sipán; el camino resultó ser algo mas largo de lo que nos habían informado pero en cualquier caso nos merecía la pena, hasta el momento. Estuvimos cerca de chocar contra una furgoneta en el camino, pero por suerte se quedó en un susto. Mienrtras alguien bajó a preguntar por nuevas indicaciones para llegar a Lambayeque otro se dió cuenta, mirando la dirección en la guía que la mayoría de los museos cerraban los Lunes, el día no estaba con nosotros. No obstante, después de tantos kilómetros decidimos ir y visitar el Museo Bruning que también albergaba una colección de cerámica características de las distintas culturas inca, moche, wari...El paisaje de vuelta estaba formado por multitud de dunas. Finalmente llegamos a Huanchaco a un hotel en la playa, donde había una gran cantidad de canoas reposando en la arena.

Esta vez el día amaneció soleado, como suele ocurrir cuando uno se marcha de un lugar en el que ha estado lloviendo desde que la llegada. Muestreamos cerca de Tembladera de nuevo: poblaciones simpátricas de S. habrochaites y S. arcanum. Los mosquitos de esta zona eran mas pequeños que en otros sitios pero picaban mas rápido y hacían mas daño. La lluvia volvió al final del día y llegamos de noche a Pacasmayo, donde pasaríamos la noche. El día había sido largo, muchas horas de coche y el cansancio y la poca luz del foco de la terraza hizo que nuestro trabajo polinizando se alargara hasta casi la media noche.

La lluvia acompañó nuestro segundo día en Cajamarca, por lo que decidimos volver al pueblo y visitar todo aquello que el día anterior estaba cerrado. Empezamos por lo baños del Inca, donde había termas naturales con agua a mas de 70 ºC a la entrada (ver alguna foto del fondo de las mismas); tras esto y tras probar una nueva fruta en los puestecillos de la entra (Mamey: con cáscara gruesa y pulpa anaranjada y dulce) volvimos al centro de Cajamarca, donde visitamos el Museo de Belen donde se encontraba una Iglesia y la sala del Hospital de Mujeres, el Hospital de Hombres, Museo antropológico y etnográfico. En el camino encontramos una calle donde celebraban jornadas de costumbres populares, pudimos ver el tipo de hierbas y semillas que utilizaban, los trajes típicos, e incluso los instrumentos musicales tradicionales que aún conservaban. Estuvimos también en el Cuarto de Rescate donde se suponía estuvo prisioner Atahualpa. Tras esto y acompañados aún por el agua, nos dirijimos a la zona del cementerio donde esperábamos encontrar otra población de S. habrochaites como así fue. Recogimos muestras en una zona bastante poblada de arañas y en el camino de vuelta conocimos a unos niños de entre 7 y 10 años que empezaron por pedirnos dinero para cuidar el coche y acabaron por querer acompañarnos a seguir buscando mas plantas de tomate. Me llamaban gringa y Bruce se hizo mas amiguillo de ellos y para comunicarse les hizo un mapa en la tierra para decirle de qué parte de estados unidos veníamos cada uno de nosotros. Volvimos al hotel pero a algunos aún nos quedaban ganas de seguir explorando y subimos hasta CumbeMayo, formaciones rocosas que comprendían los restos de lo que fue un importante acueducto de grandes dimensiones de civilizaciones pre-incas situadas a mas de 3300 metros de altura. Se hizo algo dificil salir del pueblo, Carlos nuestro conductor preguntó hasta 16 veces por indicaciones. El camino de subida era estrecho, pedregoso y daba un vértigo espantoso, pero allí que subimos y aunque la niebla poblaba la cumbre, nos adentramos a pie apenas unos 100 metros para ver algo mas de cerca. Conocimos al señor que estaba al cargo de aquella zona, y nos aconsejó volver temprano, pero no iba a ser posible, había que conservar lo poco que nos alcanzara la vista de aquel paisaje. Volvimos y el mal de alturas como lo llaman allí empezó a hcer efecto en algunos de nosotros, mi cabeza no está acostumbrada a tales condiciones atmosféricas.

Octavo Día de Expedición: Destino Río Jetequepeque
Madrugamos para ver la plaza de armas de Trujillo antes de la hora del desayuno. La noche anterior pasamos por esa plaza en la furgoneta de camino al hotel y era algo que mercía la pena ver con luz. Nuestro destino de hoy era ver las poblaciones del Río Jequetepeque en dirección a Cajamarca. Llegamos hasta Tembladeras donde pudimos recolectar furtos y flores de S. pimpinellifolium. Comimos nuestro pan con queso y plátano en la plaza de armas y continuamos la búsqueda. Varios kilómetros mas de carretera y encontramos poblaciones simpátricas de S. arcanum y S. peruvianum en los mágenes escarpados de la carretera. Bruce y Paul eran por lo general los que mas se aventuraban a escalar hasta llegar allá donde estuviera la planta de tomate de interés. El día había sido fructífero, volvíamos satisfechos del hallazgo. Para llegar a Cajamarca hay que subir hasta mas de 3200 metros de altitud por una carretera algo descuidada, que nos hizo ir saltando continuamente dentro de la furgoneta. El paisaje era impresionante, aunque el camino se hacía largo y tedioso y cada cual intentaba llevarlo lo mejor que podía. Bruce escuchaba música mientras disfrutaba de las vistas, Reynaldo leía la prensa local, Steve consultaba su guía de turismo sobre Cajamarca, Pat repasaba las notas de las poblaciones de Solanum visitadas y por visitar, Paul aprovechaba para echar una siestecita y Roger iba en la delantera guiando e intentando controlar a nuestro chofer Carlos para que no realizara mas adelantamientos dobles por aquellos caminos. Se hacía tarde y paramos dos minutos a contemplar la vista de la zona de Cajamarca desde todo lo alto antes que anocheciera. La niebla nos acompañó la última parte de nuestro camino. Finalmente llegamos al pueblo y tras mucho preguntar encontramos el hotel El Ingenio. Cenamos allí y probamos la especialidad del pueblo: Sopa Chupe Verde.

Séptimo Día de Expedición: Destino Río Pativilca
Tras salir del hotel y encontrar un lugar abierto para desayunar, nos dirigimos al rio Pativilca, en busca de varias poblaciones simpátricas. Una vez abandonada la carretera general el camino no está asfaltado y presentaba gran cantidad de boquetes que nuestro chófer se encargaba de sortear con la furgoneta. Tras varios kilómetros y ayudados por las indicaciones del GPS de Bruce llegamos a donde suponía encontraríamos los tomates que buscábamos. En su defecto una gran cantidad de cañas de azúcar y de maiz cubrían los alrededores del Rio Pativilca. Buscamos rio arriba y rio abajo pero tan solo encontramos tomates de una variedad cultivada en lo que debía ser propiedad privada. Preguntamos a la gente del lugar y al parecer, las plantas de tomates silvestres fueron hace tiempo eliminadas aprovehcndo esa tierra para el cultivo dirigido de otras especies. Nuesto gozo en un pozo, ya no habría posibilidad alguna de saber cómo se comportarían las poblaciones simpátricas de aquella zona y cómo serían los cruces con las especies recolectadas hasta ahora en otra zona geográfica del pais. Asumimos la pérdida y volvimos a la furgoneta en dirección a Trujillo. El camino era largo, mas de 5 horas de coche sin parar mas que para repostar gasolina. Paramos por el camino a comer de picnic en una zona donde se encontraban las ruinas arquológicas; muchos de los sitios que visitamos están alejados de cualquier supermercado o restaurante donde comer, por lo que generalmente paramos en la mañana a comprar pan, queso y fruta para preparar a medio día unos bocadillos y luego hacer la cena algo mas fuerte una vez encontramos el alojamiento del día. Trujillo es una ciudad grande, con gran cantidad de tráfico pero por suerte, tras varias vueltas encontramos un hotel con habitaciones para todos.

Dejamos el CIP para dirigirnos hacia el Norte. Paramos a mitad de camino en la plaza de armas de Huachos para saciar el hambre con un bocata y continuamos hasta Barranca donde nos alojamos en el hostal Casablanca en la playa. Nos bañamos (Roger, Reynaldo, Paul y yo) en un mar revuelto con gran cantidad de olas. Después de una copa de vino, nos recogimos pronto, los últimos días habían sido agotadores y necesitábamos reponer fuerzas para seguir lúcidos en los próximos días.

Drove back toward Pachasmayo on Hwy 8. Roger observed that there are patches of pavement pretty much all along the road. Nevertheless, it is a very bumpy road.

Stopped at a graveyard to look for S. habrochaities (S7 15.240, W78 29.342).

There is a large population of S. habrochaities growing on a stone wall surrounding a corn field ~100m NW of the grave yard (S7 15.247, W78 29.425 Alt 2803m = 9,250ft)

Roger spotted one S. habrochaities along the road (from the van) growing below 1365m but I could not get GPS reading. This seems to be a fairly extensive sympatric site, as S. Arcanum was sited at several places along the road and S. habrochaities was sited at least twice.

At the bridge site (S7 17.236, W78 49.265, Alt 1587), both species were found growing right in the stream bed..from ~50m upstream of the bridge to ~75m downstream. S. arcanum is also growing in the road cut and the rocky embankment. At least 3 S. habrochaities and 4 S. arcanum were found at the bridge site.

On the way back, stopped to collect S. arcanum near the following sites (not exact because the van was sometimes moving). Also the GPS is slow when close to the cliff. Further, the altitude is important because the road has switchbacks.

Hello again,
This is Pat with my second post about the trip south of Lima. We fortunately got a larger 15-person van for our road trips, to hold our luggage as well as ourselves. We got onto the Pan American Highway and headed to the town of Asia, where a sympatric pair had been reported previously. From Google Earth we suspected that the area had been heavily cultivated and indeed that was the case. We did find one wild tomato species, Solanum corneliomuelleri, next to a cotton field. After collecting, we headed to Rio Canete (with a brief stop at a Pisco brandy winery), a wild light green river known for rafting and kayaking and made our way to the touristic town of Lunahuana. We found a lovely little hotel there called Hotel Alta with an open dining area with many flowers and trees, including avocado trees, a swimming pool and a trail down to the river. After dropping off our luggage, we headed up the river valley and branched off up a rough road. We found a terraced garden including an apple orchard and lucked out with a three-species tomato area; S. corneliomuelleri, S. pimpinellifolium and S. pennellii. After a fairly hair-raising drive back to the hotel in the dark, we had a quick swim in the pool and dinner on the lovely terrace. Tamales here are different from Mexican ones, with coarser corn meal and containing olives, raisins and meat. The next morning we learned how coffee works in Peru. Café con leche is made with a high concentration of instant coffee poured into hot water, and leche con café is made with concentrated instant coffee poured into hot milk. We spent the day up the Rio Canete, starting with a very interesting gas fill up where gas was brought out of a hut in a bucket and poured into the tank with a funnel (we will attach a movie of this). Our goal on this visit was to collect “marginal” SC S. habrochaites for our studies of formation of new lineages. We found our first population near a waterfall near the Puente Auco. Again there were enough flowers to collect for proteomics, and we were able to catch our first pollinators here. We hope to identify these at CIP with the help of folks who have studied wild potato pollinators. We then headed up a very narrow road (needed the floppy hat shield) to the beautiful little town of Yauyos, where we spotted another S. habrochaites at the entrance to town and at the local cemetery. After a lunch of lomos saltado we collected at the cemetery and caught more pollinators including a very large bee (will post movie). We returned to our hotel again in the dark and were too tired for dinner, just had local bananas and mandarinas. Our young folks (Paul, Phillip, Gloria and Reynaldo) did pollinations (we middle agers could not deal with the delicate maneuvers for emasculations and pollinations) late into the night. The next day we took a day off and headed back to the coast to the town of Parracas. After finding a nice hotel (El Mirador) we turned in our dirty laundry for washing and went to the Parracas National Parque. We found a lovely little beach (La Mina), rock skipping contests and fossil discovery. After a mass emailing interval, dinner in town included local fish, corvino and lenguado, and Pisco Sours. The next morning we drove through Pisco which was devastated two years ago by an earthquake and is still trying to recover. We purchased picnic supplies (which worked much better than a restaurant for lunches), started up the Rio Pisco and then branched off on the Rio Chiris to go to the town of Ticrapo. We knew that sympatric species should be in the area but could not find them at first. Reynaldo and Phillip were the heroes of the day as they hiked up into the hills and found our populations. We had a nice group of S. habrochaites growing sympatrically with S. corneliomuelleri to collect from. Back down the river valley we decided to head a bit north to make the next day’s drive to Lima more palatable, so we ended up in the surfing town of Cerro Azul for the night, after a truly frightening drive of passing large trucks at high rates of speed in the dark. Our hotel was pretty marginal, and my camera was stolen from the van as we unloaded our luggage, but the worst thing was a LOUD concert next door that went on pretty much all night. Steve actually went over and mingled with the crowd, noting that he “fit right in”. Hmmm. We all woke bleary-eyed and walked into town for breakfast, afterwards enjoying watching the incredible surfing from the pier. We arrived back in Lima in the late afternoon and had an excursion to the local supermarket, which I always love to do in a foreign country. There were at least a dozen kinds of potato in the vegetable section, as well as the most extremely purple corn I have ever seen, which they use to make a purple sweet drink called Chicha Marada. We hade a great picnic at CIP and then took care of laundry and emailing and reserving the van for the north trip. At dinner the CIP folks prepared an extravaganza of potatoes (around 6 kinds) and roasted meat. They really are spoiling us. After dinner Bruce, Roger and I brainstormed for a possible future proposal with CIP and wrote an abstract to discuss with Merideth the next day. Finally, to bed!

PanAm Hiway. Head north toward San Pedro de Lloc. Want to pick up Hiway 8 to Cajamarca. Want to collect on the Rio Jequetepeque. Lots of rice growing in this valley.

Desayunamos en el único bar que encontramos que sirvieran desayuno. Bocata de morcilla, algo fuerte pero cubrió el antojo. Volvimos al hotel a terminar las polinizaciones. Aunque el día estaba nublado, la vista de la playa, solitaria a esas horas de la mañana era espectacular. Un montón de pájaros sobrevolaban las olas y todo transmitía sensación de serenidad; quién diría que cuando llega la noche puede aquello convertirse en semejante pesadilla. Fue un día realmente agotador. Ya de vuelta en el CIP, arreglamos contrato de furgoneta para la semana próxima y preparamos la maleta para el día siguiente. Nos esperaba la última etapa del viaje: el Norte.

Sexto día de expedición: Destino Río Pisco
Recogemos las cosas del hotel y nos dirigimos hacia el Río Pisco a muestrear hasta llegar al pueblo de Ticrapo. Comimos un bocata en plaza de armas. Esta vez los tomates silvestres no estaban tan accesibles y subimos monte a través hasta dar con ellos: una gran población de S. habrochaites. Mientras comíamos, en la plaza había una niña jugando con el carrito de su hermano en una cuesta. El viaje de vuelta fue largo, hasta llegar a Cerro Azul en la costa. En el camino paramos cerca de un puente que el sector masculino no pudo resistirse a adentrar en él. Llegamos de noche y costó encontrar un hotel donde hubiera habitaciones para todos y al menos agua caliente. Finalmente encontramos uno cerca de la playa con sitio para todos y que parecía incluso bastante acogedor; nos sentimos con suerte después de tantos kilómetros. Salimos a encontrar algún sitio donde cenar algo rápido con idea de acostarnos pronto. Había musiquilla en algún bar cerca de la playa y como aquel pueblo es tan tranquilo, se escuchaba con bastante claridad. Preguntamos y en principio parecía que a eso de las 12 cortarían la música, con lo que la ilusión de descansar pronto se desvaneció. Estaban a mas de 500 metros probablemente pero parecía que teníamos los altavoces en el cabecero de la cama. A eso de las 3 y media de la mañana creo que decidiron var por finalizado el concierto, una pesadilla. A la mañana siguiente, la mayoría no había conseguido pegar ojo y buscábamos como locos un sitio donde pudieramos tomar café con leche, leche con café o lo que fuera. El único que no parecía estar malhumorado por ello era Steve, que decía que ya que no podía dormir, lo mejor que pudo hacer fue unirse al concierto e ir a la playa a ver de qué iba aquello.

Hello All,
This is Pat, also known as Fearful Leader because I use my floppy straw hat to avoid looking over the edges as we drive into the Andes. This is my first post (very tardy!) of three and I will try to add some new thoughts and pictures about our trip. CIP is Potato Central, filled with potato photographs, paintings and sculpture. Even the coffee cups at the Symposium were potato-like. We are staying in CIP’s small but comfortable dorm rooms while we are in Lima, and their cafeteria supplies all the meals. We are traveling in a van with a driver because it is impossible to (for us) to drive in the free-for-all of Lima traffic. Our driver Carlos is unflappable even when we are stopped about once a day by police seeking bribes (Carlos magically deflects them). He is a great proponent of Inka Kola, a bright yellow soft drink that is very popular. Our first collecting trip up the Rio Lurin was a big success. Our first site was one originally found near Sisicaya by Charlie Rick -full of S. pennelli growing amongst the cacti and rocks. Really incredible. Then during a traffic altercation on a very narrow road, Esther found one little S. pimpinellifolium, causing Paul to walk down the road (while drivers argued vociferously about who should move where) where he discovered a site containing three sympatric species; S. pimpinellifolium, S. pennellii and S. corneliomuelleri. A great day! After our collecting trips we have meetings with updates of our projects -- Reynaldo shown here. Rio Rimac only produced S. corneliomuelleri but gave us an opportunity to try out Cuye (guinea pig) for lunch at a small restaurant. Monday’s Symposium on Reproductive Barriers in the Solanaceae was a big success and we celebrated with a dinner in the upscale Barranco district of Lima. I had my first Pisco Sour and it was love at first sip. We have discovered during our long drives that Steve and Bruce are wizards of all subjects esoteric, especially history. Our last trip out of Lima was up the Rio Chillon. It took us at least an hour to cross Lima to reach “Highway” 18, which was worse in Lima than many mountain roads. Just outside of the town of Yaso we found a great site with S. habrochaites, S. pimpinellifolium and S. corneliomuelleri and caught our first pollinators . We even had enough flowers to collect for proteomics for Gloria. We divide up the jobs at each site -- Roger doing most of the site and plant description and fruit collection, me collecting leaves for DNA, Bruce collecting styles for RNA, Paul collecting cuttings for pollinations, Gloria doing photography, Reynaldo collecting pollen and Steve and Phillip collecting pollinators whenever we can find them. We make quite an efficient crew and everyone jumps in whenever they are needed. After proteomic collection, we then wound our way up to the pretty town of Canta at about 2500 m and had lunch (fried local trout and lomo saltada, a kind of Peruvian stir-fry). As we headed back down we found a great population of S. habrochaites, the large flowered SI type that is representative of our “central” population of this species. On the way back we stopped in the town of San Mateo (famous for its “agua mineral”) and saw a festival with a brass band and traditional Peruvian dancing (see movie). Another great day but we were very tired by the time we got back to CIP. Paul still had many pollinations to do in his room at CIP – good thing he is superhuman. The next day (Wednesday April 22) we talked with Merideth Bonierbale of CIP about further collaborations and had a great lunch at Punte Azul with ceviche and causa (layers of mashed potato with other things, seafood in our case). Peruvian food is really wonderful. Then we prepared for our first road trip to the south of Lima. Whew—there is part one of my part of the blog! Next -- to the south!

El día comenzó para mí a eso de las seis de la mañana con un paseo matinal por los jardines exteriores camino abajo hasta llegar al río. Hacía un día espléndido ya a esas horas y no podía resistirme. Tras desayuno en el hotel y retirada del equipaje, nos dirijimos dirección a Paracas, donde nos esperaba nuestro primer día de asueto y relax después de una semana intensa de trabajo. Se me iba a hacer extraño ir conduciendo por carretera sin estar pendiente de si la planta allá a lo lejos que se divisaba era de tomate silvestre o cualquier otra cosa. Por el camino nos encontramos con montes rocosos y escarpados sin apenas vegetación, hasta llegar a la costa, donde una gran extensión de la misma en la zona de playa estaba destinada a una factoría de pollos, varias decenas de habitáculos repletos de pollos en su interior. Hacia el otro lado de la carretera había un montón de bodegas, que en su mayoría lo que vendían era Pisco. Paramos en una de ellas para ver cómo elaboraban y procesaban el vino. El paisaje se transformó en una sucesión de dunas hasta llegar a Paracas. Es curioso ver esas enormes dunas y montañas despobladas. Una vez ya en el lugar tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar la playa de La Mina ubicada en Paraje Natural, caracterizado por multitud de dunas y cantidad de aves en la zona de playa. Mereció la pena el chapuzón.

Quinto día de expedición: Rio Cañete, segunda parte
Comenzamos el día con el desayuno en el hotel; el café con leche es entendido aquí como leche con café. Te sirven un tazón de leche con una jarrita de café concentrado (café pasado le llaman). Paramos a echar gasolina en el pueblo. Un señor sacó dos cubos enormes llenos de combustible que introdujo en el depósito del coche con ayuda de un colador gigante. Río arriba, mas alto que el día anterior, la carretera se encontraba en obras, tuvimos que parar un par de veces y esperar a que terminaran de transportar todos los materiales y reabrieran de nuevo la circulación. Encontramos esta vez la población de habrochaites que buscábamos el día anterior, y pasamos gran parte de la mañana recogiendo muestras.
Comimos en Yauyo, casi todo el pueblo estaba en reconstrucción de carreteras. Solo había un restaurante según nos dijeron y la especialidad era la comida china, aunque también servían los platos peruanos tradicionales tales como lomo salteado y bistek con papas. Mientas buscábamos donde comer vimos otra población de S. habrochaites cerca del cementerio, así que al terminar de almorzar regresamos allí para muestrear. El tamaño de los abejorros era enorme y Phillip y Bruce consiguieron capturar algunos de ellos con el cazamariposas. Esa noche terminamos las polinizaciones de las plantas recogidas en campo y dormimos de nuevo en el hotel Río Alto de Lunahuaná.

Cuarto día de expedición: Destino Rïo Asia / Rio Cañete
Tras muchos intentos en los días anteriores, conseguimos cambiar la furgoneta por una mas grande, para poder meter la maleta de viaje que a cada cual le acompañaba para pasar unos días fuera del CIP.
Nuestra primera parada fue en Río Asia, cerca de un campo de algodón (Bruce y Paul en la foto), donde encontramos plantas de S. peruvianum con frutos (foto con fruto y flor de esta especie) e incluso pudimos cazar algunos de los agentes polinizadores que revoloteaban por allí. Encontramos un hotel en Lunahuaná, cerca del rio e incluso con piscina. Después de reservar habitaciones seguimos río arriba para la siguiente zona de muestreo. El camino era estrecho y pedregoso, y cada vez nos encontrábamos a mayor altitud, aumentando el vértigo de algunos (Pat hacía acoplo de su sombrero para no verlo). Pero he de decir que el paisaje era impresionante, el curso de agua de aquel rio discurriendo en aquel paraje montañoso daba energía. De nuevo no encontramos la población de S. habrochaites que buscábamos pero pudimos disfrutar de la enorme cantidad de cactus que cubrían aquellos montes. A la vuelta alguna piedra se introdujo en el freno de la rueda de atrás, provocando un ruido chungo cada vez que frenaba. Aunque paramos un par de veces parecía que no había forma de arreglar aquello, aunque por suerte, tras algo mas de una hora, alcanzamos la carretera con piso firme y al poco desapareció. Ya de vuelta en el hotel, esa noche probé yuca con queso frito para cenar.

Permanecemos en el CIP con reuniones varias, preparando el material necesario en laboratorio para realizar las extracciones de las muestras recogidas hasta el momento. Esta vez almorzamos en Lima, en la terraza de un restaurante llamado Punto Azul. Aquí probamos lo que llaman ceviche, y causa, dos formas distintas de preparar el pescado acompañado siempre con patata, realmente delicioso. Alguien tuvo la idea de pedir calamares a la romana con alioli (cuantos recuerdos).
Volvimos al CIP y preparamos la maleta para salir al día siguiente, en dirección al sur por unos días.

Hoy si encontramos la población de S. habrochaites que andábamos buscando y pudimos recoger muestras para los distintos estudios, incluyendo extracción de proteínas en este caso. Alguna que otra planta de S. pimpinellifolium y S. cornemullierae se encontraban entre esta gran población de habrochaites.
Paramos en Canta para comer. Vendían madejas y prendas echas con auténtica lana de alpaca. Canta es un pueblo muy tranquilo, auténtico y conservado, alejado de todo
Hoy no nos acompañó Steve en la expedición, quedó en el CIP participando en otro symposium, y digo esto porque generalmente ameniza las horas de carretera con sus historias, sobre la propia historia del pais, o sobre experiencia propia. Es un gran narrador y aprendemos mucho de él en este sentido.

Symposium en CIP. Tuvimos una jornada de exposiciones de las distintas partes de nuestro proyecto con los investigadores del centro. Las presentaciones fueron proyectadas de forma simultánea en inglés y español en dos proyectores diferentes ubicados en la misma sala.
Esa tarde al acabar el symposium fuimos hasta el océano. Anochece en esta época del año sobre las 6 de la tarde, por lo que en seguida oscureció pero aun así, se podía ver el movimiento de las olas y el rumor de las mismas acompasado. Cenamos en una región llamada Barranco una parrillada de carne con choclo de acompañamiento (un tipo de maiz autóctono), pisco souer y cerveza cusqueña (la cerveza del lugar). Nuestro conductor solo bebe incacola (marca de refresco peruana), quizá las tres bebidas mas representativas de Perú hasta el momento.

Segundo día de expedición: Destino Rio Rimac
El día era soleado ya desde tempramo y Carlos nos recibió en la furgoneta con música de Nino Bravo. En la carretera encontramos una gran cantidad de autobuses con mucha gente hasta llegar a la montaña. Paramos a comprar pan, queso y fruta por el camino por si acaso no encontrábamos donde almorzar como el día anterior. Como suele pasar, esta vez encontramos un restaurante en Matucana. Yo pedí trucha, es muy típica de aquella zona, y hacía tiempo que echaba de menos el pescado; me sorprendió ver que aquello parecía mas un salmón (por el color rosado) que lo que yo acostumbraba a entender por trucha. Al parecer, el tipo de alimento que les dan hace que cambie de color...tengo que investigar a ver de qué exactamente se trata.
El área en que se encuentra el Río Rimac resultó ser muy distinta a la que encontramos el día anterior, mucho mas frondosa y con gran cantidad de vegetación. Quizá la altura a la que nos encontremos haya mas precipitaciones y haga mas húmeda aquella zona. En la zona de surco encontramos plantas de S. peruvianum. Seguimos rio arriba pero no encontramos la población de S. habrochaites que estábamos buscando
Subimos hasta el pueblo de San Mateo, donde celebraban una fiesta relacionada con la tala de un árbol. Una banda de música acompañaba el baile tradicional en la plaza de armas. Volvimos al CIP en la tarde, aún con luz, y en la cena probamos para beber purple corn, zumo muy dulce de color intensamente morado procedente de una variedad de maíz oscuro de aquí.

Primer día de expedición. Destino Rio Luria.
Alquilamos una furgoneta que en principio fue mas pequeña de lo que esperábamos, por lo que tuvimos que reducir las dos enormes cajas de supplies de muestreo a una sola y acoplar entre los pies las cajas de corcho que llevábamos para recogida de muestras. Aunque salimos temprano, el tráfico en Lima es intenso, todo el mundo va rápido buscando huecos entre carriles...de locura; por suerte, alquilamos la furgoneta con conductor, que se llama Carlos y nos va a acompañar a lo largo de todos estos días de viaje. Una vez llegamos a la zona del Rio Luria, todos estábamos pendientes de lo que había en el monte, buecando tomates desde la furgoneta que, hay que decirlo, incluso por esos carriles marchaba rapidito. Roger iba en la delantera y es capaz de reconocer no solo si es una planta de tomate lo que parece haber a unos metros de distancia, sino la especie de Solanum, bien habrochaites, pennellii o peruvianum entre otras, por el tamaño e intensidad de color de la flor desde lo lejos. Nuestra primera parada fue en Sisicaya, en una zona pedregosa y seca donde encontramos una gran población de S.pennellii en floración pero sin fruto alguno. Probamos allí el Vacai o Guaba en un árbol cercano que había en el camino; son como unas vainas grandes similares a las algarrobas (según lo que yo conozco) pero que en su interior contienen unas grandes semillas negras rodeadas de los que sería el fruto, mucilaginoso, blanco y dulce. La segunda parada fue casi forzosa pues nos topamos de frente con un autobus que venía en direccciòn contraria y con un coche en medio que no pretendía moverse y a la mínima se encaró casi con nuestro chofer discutiendo quién debía retroceder; tras unos momentos de tensión todos bajamos d la furgoneta y, como no hay mal que por bien no venga, descubrimos hasta 3 especies diferentes de tomates silvestres en esa zona: pimpinelifollium, pennellii y cornemullierae. Etiquetamos algunas plantas para recogida de material: pollen, pistilos y hojas para posterior extracción de DNA y RNA entre otras cosas.
El tiempo pasó rñapido entre una cosa y otra, y con la emoción de la aventura, los kilómetros por aquellos carriles y la gran distancia hasta los pueblos mas cercanos, no encontramos donde almorzar; un par de paquetes de patatas y de frutos secos nos surtieron hasta la hora de la cena.

Head up river toward Ocros to look for the 3-species sympatric site supposedly at (S10 39.31, W77 26.566). Road is extremely bumpy. Area has very intense agriculture…mostly sugar cane, some avacado, other minor crops. One farmer said they eradicated the tomatoes. Could not locate the original Ocros site.

Car stop at (S10 36.088, W77 50.439). Nice river, nice mountains…no tomatoes. Looked along fields and along the river but did not find any tomatoes at all.

Primer día en el Lima. Llegamos la noche anterior y dormimos en el CIP (Centro de Investigación de la Papa), donde se trabaja fundamentalmente en el estudio de las muchas variedades de papas nativas de Perú; gran parte de la decoración está basada en motivos relacionados con la papa, como es el caso de los centro de mesa de la zona de comedor. Dedicamos este primer día a planificación de las próximas semanas, reparto de tareas...Merideth (nuestro contacto en este centro) nos enseña las instalaciones, invernaderos y campos destinados al cultivo. En las siguientes fotos aparecen algunos integrantes del grupo en los jardines del CIP, cerca de una planta de jazmín inmensa, olor inconfundible. Probamos la primera de muchas frutas exóticas y nueva al menos para mí: Lucuma; el sabor recuerda a una batata aunque la textura es blanda sin necesidad de cocinarla.
He de decir que el café en el desayuno era excelente; para una malagueña como yo, el sabor de un buen café y el volver a sentir el calor y el sol quemando en esta época del año es realmente agradable.

First day in Lima. We arrived the previous night and slept in CIP (Potato Research Center), where most of the studies are focus on potato native species from Peru; many decoration details are related to potatoes (see dinning-room table in the picture). Merideth (the contact researcher in this institute) gave us a tour through the greenhouses and crop field in the center. In the following pictures we can see some of our group members in the gardens center, next to a huge jazmin plant, unmistakable perfume. We had the opportunity to taste the first exotic fruit of this trip: Lucuma; it tastes like a sweet potato but the texture is soft without requirements to cooking it.
I have to say that the taste of the peruvian coffee in the morning was excellent. For a malagueña person like me, the possibility to drink such a good coffee and the opportunity to feel the hot weather and the sun burning the skin is really nice.

En busca del Tomate Silvestre / Chasing the Wild Tomato

Al igual que otras expediciones realizadas anteriormente por el grupo de Charles Rick desde 1948 hasta 1995, un grupo de biólogos de bata y de bota se embarca en la aventura del estudio de las autopolinizaciones y polinizaciones cruzadas entre especies de tomate silvestres originales de tierras peruanas. Nuestro proyecto estudia cuales son las barreras de reproducción interespecíficas en tomate, y para ello trabajamos con especies silvestres y cultivadas con distinto comportamiento en cuanto a la reproducción: autocompatibles y autoincompatibles. Perú es cuna de una gran variedad de tomates silvestres tales como S. habrochaites, S. pimpinellifolium, S. pennellii entres otras. Dependiendo del área geográfica de la población, el sistema de unión puede cambiar y por ello vamos a muestrear desde Cajamarca (Norte) pasando por Lima (Centro) y bajando hasta el Sur (Área de Pisco).

In the same way that previous field studies carried out by Charles Rick group from 1948 to 1995, a group of plant biologist repeat the experience studing the self and cross pollinations in wild tomato species from Peru. Our project is interested in reproductive barriers in tomato focus on wild and domesticated species self-compatible and self-incompatible. Perú conserved a huge amount of wild tomato species such as S. habrochaites, S. pimpinellifolium, S. pennellii. Depending of the geographic origen of the population, the matching system can be different and that is why we are going to sampling from North (Cajamarca), Center (Lima) and South (Pisco) areas in Peru

Collected two very large bees. Photos (poor) of largest species on habrochaities (no movie) this site is along the wall around the graveyard at the edge of town. Most plants are on the south side of the grave yard. Soil is very rocky. More plants are seen around the river on the downstream side of town, just as you enter or leave town.

Habrochaites and pimpi grow on the slope, around the orchard (banana and ??quince??) and in the weeds next to the field. The movie was made on habrochaities growing next to the orchard (S11 34.332, W 76 43.631), which is ~20m from the road and ~10m from the irrigation ditch.

Our trip date is less than a week away, April 16th and things are picking up around our lab with organizing supplies and tying up loose ends. But, before I go on let me first introduce you to the rest of the team. Besides myself the IRB Tomato group includes, Dr. Patricia Bedinger from Colorado State University who is the lead PI on the project, Dr. Bruce McClure from the University of Missouri, Dr. Roger Chetelat from the University of California at Davis (also curator of the Tomato Genetics Resource Center), Drs. Jocelyn Rose and Gloria Lopez Casado from Cornell, Dr. Esther Van der Knaap and Reynaldo Nunez, from The Ohio State University Agriculture Research and Development Center (OARDC), Steve Stack also from Colorado State University, and Phillip Kear from the Center International de la Papa who is currently working at the University Missouri. Joss will be the only one not able to make this trip. Besides Roger, Phillip, and Reynaldo who is Peruvian, this will be our first field expedition to Peru.

The first bit of business after the late arrival into Lima is to meet with our Peruvian counterparts from the Center International de la Papa (CIP), Merideth Bonierbale and David Tay. Merideth is in charge of the Germplasm Enhancement and Crop Improvement Division at CIP which is primarily involved with developing improved tuber germplasm and fostering their use with small scale growers. A student from Merideth's group, Phillip Kear, has been working at The University of Missouri with Bruce McClure since the fall of last year. David Tay is the lead on another division at CIP, The Genetic Resource Characterization and Conservation. He and Merideth have been very helpful on-the-ground contact for Pat and Roger, especially with getting us contacts for housing, transportation and permitting.

This trip will be the fifth meeting of the minds for the IRB Tomato group, as it were, and a fairly stated pen ultimate one at that. We hope to accomplish a hefty amount of field work on some key population of wild tomatoes, as well as extend our research to a broader scientific group with a Symposium on Reproductive Barriers in the Solanaceae. Our stay in Lima happens to also coincide with a cytogenetics meeting. Fortuitous for Steve, who will be in attendance, since this is not only his expertise but passion.

Hello, IRB tomato is an joint research effort to identify interspecific reproductive barriers in tomato (IRB tomato). These are barriers that many of the wild species of tomato process to prevent two distinct species from breeding together. The tomatoes we work with are endemic to Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and the Gallapagos Islands. They differ from your garden tomato which lacks these barriers to breeding and will accept pollen from most any wild tomato species (ex. Solanum pennellii). However S. pennellii will not allow pollen from your garden tomato to fertilize and produce seed. This one way cross is called Unilateral Incongruity (UI). Some wild tomato species also process barriers to inbreeding called Self Incompatibility (SI). The former is less understood even though many of these species co-habitate the same areas, in some instances their branches have been found to intertwine (S. pimpinellifolium and S. arcanum). In the next couple of weeks a group of researchers will be heading to Peru to look for some of these wild tomato populations to better understand these interspecies mechanisms to reproduction. Periodic posting of our adventures will be found here, so stay tuned.
